![]() ![]() Even stranger: the tracklist is packed with features for the first time since we’ve known her. First, that smile, beaming from the belladonna of sadness, posed in front of the same truck from the Born to Die artwork. Two things immediately set Lust for Life apart from the rest of Del Rey’s catalog. Lust for Life presents her as something more interesting: a great American storyteller. For years, it seemed Del Rey’s artistry lay in her ability to offer herself as a concept pursued to its logical end. But her fourth full-length, Lust for Life, suggests that at its best and truest, Del Rey’s music is sublimely simple: one voice, one story, one meaning. Her layers on layers of symbolism can be disorienting, as I imagine Del Rey intends them to be, encouraging endless cross-references and deep-dive readings of her work that seek to apply some grand cinematic theory to it all-and perhaps there is. Her songs overflow with the iconography of America at its most mythic: purple mountains’ majesty, rockets’ red gleaming, Monroe, Manson. Still, even for the converted, it’s almost too easy to trip into the endless black holes of Del Rey’s universe, where Hollywood sits at the very center in glamorous ruin. Every word, every sigh, every violin swell, the Whitman quotes and JFK fantasies and soft ice cream. If there’s anything about Del Rey that’s obvious by now, it’s that she means it-all of it. Instead, doubling down on her palette of inky blues and blacks, the singer-songwriter has delivered a trio of dark, dense, radio-agnostic albums that stand wholly apart from any of her pop music peers. 'Venice Bitch' instrumental always hits, and the final line was just MWUAH, chef's kiss.Īnyway, if you're hesitant to listen to this album, or delaying it for some reason, this is your sign to put in some headphones and remember why Lana is one of the best artists to ever do it.Since the drastically superior Paradise Edition reissue of Born to Die, Del Rey has neither swayed nor settled. And 'TT x VB' was an incredible end to the album. 'Peppers' is weird to me it changes the vibes of the album, but that's the point, right? To "throw caution to the wind" and shed the feelings that have weighed her down. It felt so personal and all I could do was sit and listen, just speechless. 'Paris, Texas' all the way to 'Fishtail' had me immersed. So beautiful, but makes me feel frantic and anxious when the piano goes faster than it should and when her voice is quicker than the beat. 'Kintsugi' is just beautiful from the lyrics to the meaning and practice of kintsugi, I think it genuinely has shot up to my top 10 songs of hers. 'Candy Necklace' is sweet in its sound, and yet the lyrics deliver a feeling of emptiness. The final line sets the rest of the album on its way. I think it sets the tone for the entire album its haunting, unsettling, makes me feel nervous, and yet I find myself so immersed in it, almost like a car crash that you can't look away from. I know there is some controversy over 'Judah Smith Interlude', but honestly I'm not sure why. The first two tracks are reminiscent of NFR to me, but once you hit 'Sweet', it starts to change, and the switch in A&W is still one of my favorite things she's done in a song. How Lana manages to encapsulate feelings I've often felt alone in and to lay them out so openly, yet in a poetic and beautiful way is just insane. In all honesty, I never fully connected with COCC or BB, and I still feel that NFR! is her magnum opus, but WOW. discussion posts that do not foster discussion, low quality images/badly cropped memes, short reaction posts/rants/showerthoughts.
